Strategies for Super Readers FREEBIE

When I was little, I was obsessed with Wonder Woman! I ran around everywhere in my Wonder Woman Underoos blocking imaginary bullets with my plastic bracelets and twirling my jump rope/golden lasso. I was invincible I tell you! Sometimes when I am working WAY too hard, the hubs has to remind me that I am not Wonder Woman. It seriously bums me out for a bit. I am momentarily tempted to run over him with my invisible jet when he points that out to me.

Anyhoo, the vast majority of the students I serve are boys. I had to find a way to talk about reading strategies in a context that they could relate to. I learned the hard way that if you smile and say "use your flip flop froggy strategy" to a street wise kid who has been already been retained in 2nd grade, he will roll his eyes, huff and puff at you, and say, "Whatever!". Live and learn, y'all! So, what's a girl to do to provide them with quick clues about applying their reading strategies? Wonder Woman to the rescue! Now, we talk about reading strategies in the context of their favorite superheroes.

I hope you can use this FREE set of reading strategy charts! They have been invaluable to me! It makes me giggle whenever my "Whatever!" boy points at his off-task buddy and says "Wolverine that text, man!" Whatever works, y'all!

I hope y'all have a great week! I will be doing standardized testing at our alternative school.  Pray I don't get stabbed with a #2 pencil or anything crazy! I might be wishing I really was Wonder Woman by Wednesday!  Hee hee!
